What is this collection?
The fractal files (called spot files), palette files, and user formula files in
this collection are largely collected from the FEUsers group and placed in
public domain for anyone to use. FEUsers is a mailing-list of Fractal
Explorer users that share images and other files on an ongoing basis. You
can joint the FEUsers mailing list at www.fractalfairy.com/feusers/join/index.html.
Why does this collection exist?
Creating good fractal images from Fractal Explorer is about 25% good palettes,
25% good starting places, and 50% artist skill. By providing a large set
of starting places and palettes we help budding artists create more successful
images and help experienced artists explore new areas.
What can I do with files I download from this collection?
All the files in this collection are placed in the public domain, so you can do
anything you want with them. We recommend that you make substantial changes
before publishing any image. First, substantial
changes insures that you have a copyrighted work of your own. Second, if
you publish images that have only minimal or no modification, the original
author will be unlikely to contribute to this collection in the future.
What can I contribute to this collection?
We will consider any fractal files (spot files), palette files, formula files,
or files containing user formulas. The files must be your original work
either created from scratch or based on other public domain work such as the
files in this collection. To donate go here.
Where can I download Fractal Explorer?
The current release version of Fractal Explorer can be found
at www.eclectasy.com/Fractal-Explorer/index.html and at
this mirror site feusers.fractalfairy.com/fefiles/index.html. Some
of the files in this collection were created with the
latest pre-release (beta) version of Fractal Explorer. You will need to joing the
FEUsers group at www.fractalfairy.com/feusers/join/index.html
in order to access the beta version of Fractal
Explorer.
How many files can I download?
In order to promote this page as a ongoing part of the fractal creation process,
we limit each user to ten fractal (spot) files and forty gradient file downloads per day.
We place the limits to promote both ongoing use and contribute to this collection.
How many gradient files should I have in my collection?
How many and how you organize your gradient files is a personal issue.
Different artists handle palette files in different ways. As a starting
point, I suggest you create a single collection of palettes as big as can be but
still have the palette browser display without much delay. This size
will depend on the speed of your computer and your hard disks. For fast
machines, the number will be around 1000. For slow machines around 300.
You want a wide variety of palettes to help you find the best image for any set
of Select Fractal settings. For more information see Thoughts on Palettes.
